At the beginning of our pontificate, which has been entrusted to us by the providence of Almighty God, we recognized the many challenges and difficulties facing the Christian community. We desired to address the long-standing afflictions and troubles that had befallen the Christian commonwealth, but we also understood our own human limitations. We realized that our strength alone was not sufficient to bear such a heavy burden.

We observed the urgent need for peace in order to protect the commonwealth from imminent dangers, but we found that enmity and discord prevailed in all things. Above all, the princes, who have been entrusted with the direction of matters by God, were at odds with each other.

We understood the necessity of unity for the Lord's flock and the integrity of the Christian religion, but we saw that the Christian name was almost torn apart by schisms, dissensions, and heresies.
