The 6.0# Forcible Entry Flathead axe, designed in the style of a fireman’s single bit axe, features a 36″ curved handle made from American hickory. This design enhances performance and usability, aiming to reduce fatigue and prevent injuries during intensive firefighting tasks.

Used extensively across municipal fire departments, its versatile applications include chopping, battering, and serving as a doorstop. Forged from 4140 steel in the USA, its head is specifically crafted to complement the Council Halligan tool. The axe is forged with a slot that seamlessly marries with various Halligan tools, collectively known as "The Irons". An extended poll serves to balance the axe head, ensuring the center of gravity remains within the eye/handle axis. Balanced to rest flat in an open hand, it prevents blade drop or flutter during sideways swings. The flat top of the head allows the axe to stand independently.

The axe features a hand-sharpened, tapered bit designed for efficient cutting. It meets ANSI standards for bit hardness (Rc 45-60), extending at least half an inch back from the cutting edge. Council Tool's internal standards exceed this, targeting a tempered bit hardness of Rc 48-55, with a focus on 1-1/4 inches from the edge. The poll and eye walls maintain their original as-forged condition and are not hardened.

The 36″ curved American hickory handle undergoes a meticulous preparation process. The eye section is dried to below 10% moisture content to minimize shrinkage and prevent loosening over time. The axe head is hydraulically seated onto the handle and secured using a traditional wooden and steel wedge assembly. The tapered interior detail of the eye ensures a robust mechanical bond, enhancing durability and reliability in demanding conditions.
